And, once they have control, players can take out their opponents. Finally, if you have one of Anki's Supertrucks, you can do a "Takeover Race," where each player tries to gain control of the truck by shooting it. A King of the Hill race awards points to the driver who remains "king" long enough you become king by shooting the player who has the crown. In Time Trial, each contestant drives alone on the track, and the one with the shortest time wins. The goal of "Battle Race" is to finish first, and you can slow your opponents down by shooting them. Anki tracks are so simple to use that my son was able to put them together by himself when he was 4 years old. They are extremely durable and easy to snap together with their built-in magnets. The tracks look and function just like regular Anki Overdrives, but they have a small Fast & Furious logo on their edges. The set comes with ten tracks: four straight pieces and six curve pieces. The computer-driven characters will drive whatever car hasn't already been selected by a human player, so Dom could end up driving Hobbs’ truck, which he never did in the movies. Dom doesn't have a special driving style that's different from Letty's or Tej's. Racing around the track is fun, but the game really hits its stride when you engage in a battle.Īside from hearing the dialogue and seeing the characters’ pictures on the screen, there's nothing character-specific about the gameplay. Characters will also repeat the same lines over and over within the same race. For example, Hobbs sometimes says, "I'll get out of here the right way," a line which comes when his character is in prison in the movie. The dialogue is very entertaining if you're familiar with the Fast & Furious movies, but it's also completely random and not necessarily relevant to what's happening in your race. For example, Dom says things like "If a war is coming, we're gonna face it on the streets that we know best," while Tej repeats lines such as "Now I know what it feels like to be every cop ever chasing us." Parents will be pleased to know that none of the dialogue contains profanity or sexual references.Īccording to Anki, the actors had to approve all of the audio, but none of it was recorded exclusively for the game. When you compete against them, the characters spout random sound clips of things they said in the Fast and Furious movies. One of the main differences between regular Anki Overdrive and the Fast & Furious Edition is that you can race against any of four characters from the movie series: Dom (Vin Diesel), Hobbs (the Rock), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) or Tej (Ludacris). The biggest thrill is battling against friends in multiplayer.ĭepending on what mode you're in, you may have weapons you can use to shoot your opponents, either disabling their cars temporarily or scoring points in a "battle race." As you earn more points, you can unlock better and more effective weapons and outfit your car with them. You can't brake, but you can slow down by taking your finger off the pedal or holding only part of it down. There's no way to turn your car around or go into reverse. You accelerate by holding down an accelerator pedal and change lanes by tilting your mobile device. Controlling the cars is easy, and, in theory, you should never be able to drive offtrack.

It's free, it's open source, you have lots configuration of options, but it's complicated to set up and requires the user to have a firm handle on topics like encryption and firewall configuration. We'll put it this way: VNC is like the Linux of remote desktop solutions. Some versions of VNC support encryption via plugins (like UltraVNC with their SecureVNC plugin). Related: How To Remote Control Your Home Computer From Anywhere With VNCīy default VNC traffic is not encrypted (where as solutions like RDP, TeamViewer, etc. The most notable example of this is RealVNC Personal which includes preconfigured encryption. Speaking of free, for the most part implementations of VNC are completely free except for those that add in additional features on top of the VNC protocol and charge for it. For home or office use with Windows computers that support it, using Remote Desktop Connection is a no brainer because that's what RDC was made for: local network administration in a professional environment, not cross-country tech support calls with Grandma.īecause VNC is open source and the protocol is free for anyone to use, it's easy to find good VNC client apps to connect into the remote computer like VNC Viewer (i OS/ Android), a free offering from RealVNC. The display is crisp, fast, and full color, the connection is responsive, and other than the tiny blue toolbar at the top of the screen indicating your're using RDC, you'd never know you weren't using the PC sitting on the desk next to you. If you're running a household or office of computers with Windows Pro or better (so they all support RDC hosting), connecting to those machines with RDC is such a smooth experience it's like literally being right at that computer. If it's the machine of a friend or family member you're helping, that might be a deal breaker: maybe they aren't technically competent enough to look up their own IP address and maybe they don't want to give you their login.Īlthough so far we've made it sound like Windows Remote Desktop Connection is a terrible product for remote desktop use, it's actually-in the right context-the best solution. If its your own machine you're connecting to, that's not such a big deal. Once turned on, however, both the Windows and Mac OS solution allow for unattended use.įurther, you need to know the remote IP address of the server and the login credentials for that machine. If said relative just called you up and needs help, however, you're stuck not only dealing with their actual problem but the problem of walking them through turning the remote desktop functionality on. If you're doing the configuring (either on your own machine or on the behalf of your relative when you're visiting them in person), this isn't a big deal. While they aren't difficult to use, the biggest shortcoming of the built-in tools is that they need to be configured by the person on the other end. As such, people are comfortable using them-they're right at hand, free, and supplied by the company they trust enough to run their entire computer. Operating System-Based Remote Desktop: Old School and Baked Inīoth Windows and Mac OS have had remote desktop solutions built in for ages. Keeps your needs (and the abilities of the people you're helping with the remote desktop) in mind as you read through the features. Do you need on-the-go access from your mobile device? If so, a good mobile client is a must. Do you need unattended access? A solution that requires someone at the remote PC is no good if nobody is home. Is the solution just for your own use or for helping friends and relatives? Just because you're tech savvy and can easily configure things doesn't mean they will. As we run through the features of the different remote desktop solutions, keep a few important questions in mind. Got a question for Geoff? First, check out all the other articles he's written on topics like why all HDMI cables are the same, TV resolutions explained, LED LCD vs. Connecting directly to your audio device will, in theory, offer the best chance for the highest quality audio.Īlso, even though optical cables and connections are disappearing, they offer a more traditional way to connect audio that might offer fewer issues, at the expense of some sound quality and theoretically less simple usability. However, with infinite setup possibilities, we can't offer perfect idealized advice. Not every system will work like this, not least if your soundbar doesn't have enough HDMI inputs. Our advice for most people is to connect your sources to your receiver or soundbar, if they're capable, and only use ARC to get audio from your TV's internal apps. Depending on the age of your gear and complexity of your setup, getting ARC running and staying running can be frustrating. Read any user reviews about any product with ARC and there will be issues getting it to work. On paper, ARC is a great way to simplify your home theater system. If you have an older TV these higher-fidelity formats can't be sent over ARC. Optical cables don't carry Atmos, however.Ĭonnecting a source like Blu-ray directly to the receiver/soundbar has another benefit: Doly Atmos, Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio. If your TV doesn't support 5.1 passthrough, you can either connect that source to the receiver directly, or you can connect the TV and receiver with an optical cable. Keep in mind that this issue is only relevant if you have a 5.1 source, like a Blu-ray player or game console, and you're trying to send that device's audio via ARC from the TV to a receiver. Our friends over at have an extensive list of what TVs do what, though it only goes back to 2017. Some existing TVs can still do 5.1 while other TVs will output 5.1 via the optical output, but not ARC. TVs that can do this are said to have "5.1 passthrough." This restriction helped lead to the creation of eARC which we'll discuss shortly, but it enables external speakers to playback both 5.1 channel and Dolby Atmos. In other words, if you're watching a movie on Blu-ray with 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS and it's connected directly to your TV (Setup 1, above) your receiver might only be able to get 2.0 audio. Technically, TVs aren't allowed to send 5.1 audio over HDMI. Some soundbars like the Vizio Elevate offer Dolby Atmos sound over eARC, as well as a second (or in some cases third) HDMI input Ty Pendlebury/CNET Issues with 5.1Īs great as ARC can be, there is one big issue: 5.1. But in the end, this control aspect just might not function. It could be as simple has having to turn on your gear in a certain order. If it doesn't work, though, Google might help. You might not be able to realize the dream of using one remote, unless you get a universal remote control. If there's any aspect of ARC setup that's going to cause you agony, it's this. However, there's no guarantee it will work, especially across different brands or ages of gear. For instance, in Setup 1 above, your TV's remote can adjust the volume on your soundbar. In theory, CEC will let the remote from one piece of gear to control another, as long as they're connected with HDMI. Nearly every company has their own name for it, including SimpLink, Anynet+, BRAVIA Sync, and others. HDMI CEC controlĪnother HDMI feature is called CEC, or Consumer Electronics Control. You'll only use your TV's remote to turn the TV on, and access any apps built into the TV. You will switch between your sources and adjust the volume using your receiver/soundbar's remote. In this setup, your receiver/soundbar is the central hub of the entertainment system. Some budget soundbars might not have enough HDMI inputs for all your sources, in which case you'll have to use Setup 1. Using a receiver or soundbar as an HDMI switch: Connect the Blu-ray player or game console to the receiver or soundbar, then a single cable to the TV. We'll discuss this more in the "Issues with 5.1" section.Ģ. This is more of a problem if you are using a surround receiver instead of most soundbars (which typically can't playback 5.1). The potential downside of this setup is you might not be able to get 5.1 or higher surround sound. This setup lets you use your TV's remote to switch between the Blu-ray player and game console sources, and in most cases, you can use your TV's remote to control the volume. The TV becomes the central hub of your entertainment system. Using the TV as an HDMI switch: Connect the Blu-ray player and game console to the TV, then connect a single HDMI cable from the TV to the soundbar. Some suggest that electronic pulse machines work because the electrical impulses block the pain signal between the nerves and the spine.
